Link Maker

Submitted By Jack Gill (jack)

Description

For all those times when file transfer doesn't work for whatever reason.

This script will copy a selected file into your "Sites" folder and insert a nice link to it.

For it to work, you need to have Web Sharing turned on in the system prefs and port 80 open/forwarded if you're behind a firewall/router.

Version 2 adds a "locallink" script which will use your local IP. Also, added comments in the script which make it easy to add a port number.

Version 2.1 allows people connected wirelessly to use locallink. I had it as ethernet only before.

Suggestion: make an alternative for those who want to send links to other contacts on the same network, so they wouldn't have to forward any ports. In other words, instead of running a shell script to look up the external IP, it would spit out your internal IP and all you would need is sharing enabled.

Good Idea - I'll add '%_locallink at some point.

Got it working, sortof. Thanks for all your help before!

NOTE To would be users. A lot of ISPs block port 80.

To get around this, I used a program called Cocktail www.macosxcocktail.com

Just turn off personal web sharing in the prefs, then go to the internet -> ports section in cocktail, and change the web sharing port to 81.

Then I hacked the script to append ":81" to the IP... et voila! It works!

I'm glad you got it working. I've made it a lot easier to add a port number if necessary

I'm a bit new to Adium. Once I've double clicked to install it, how do I actually go about using it?
Thanks

There are 2 ways: You can use it's keyword in a message (%_link or %_locallink) or you can go to edit --> insert script and choose the script. You can also bring up this menu by right clicking the area where you type in a message window.

You should script this for use in an away message. That would be cool.
