Just one complaint - a lot of my friends use ':D' as a grin, and this set is set to trigger the smilie as ':-D'.

Both :D and :-D trigger the grin-emoticon.

Maybe he's saying that when you click on the emoticon in message view, it only reverts to :-D, when they typed :D. (checks Adium) Hmm... I'm not using the set, but my emoticons revert correctly when I click on them.
