A contact list style most likely modeled after the Smoke notification style from Growl. Each status gives the individual contact bubble a different text color and background color combination – online contacts have white text and border with a black background, offline contacts have black text with a white background, and all other statuses have graduating variations between the two. (Event colors such as typing and new message are the same as the Aqua (Tiger) color theme.) This setup makes it easy to determine a person's status at a quick glance.

The whole bezel look is also pretty nice because it goes with almost any desktop background.
