Which version of Adium do you have ?
When you choose Adium > Xtras Manager > Scripts in the menus, can you find Emotitext ?
What happens when you type "/emoti{hello;! ;) (l)}" ? Does your contact receive the words "/emoti{hello;! ;) (l)}", or does he receive nothing ? Thanks for the report.

Both evolutions are not possible with Adium scripts, sorry.
